I can report that I already did this procedure once and it worked fine for me. Not sure if I remember correctly but I may have booted a live system *in EFI* and chrooted into the installed system to uninstall grub-pc and install grub-efi. I think if you don't do it this way, then efivars are not available and cannot be set automatically. However I played around with various installations at that time and don't remember exactly what I did.
