<p>I need to connect to <span style="font-size:11.0pt">a l2tp vpn
at EPFL, using a shared secret. I haven't found a way to do this
from Linux so far, and most of the discussion threads I found
pointed to strongswan. Do you know a better way?</span></p>

where are you using this? i always perceived strongswan to be rather
niche, most people use either openvpn or one of the cisco vpns (vpnc,
openconnect). all of these three variants are nicely supported with any
linux system since years.
