i think that either your initrd was not completely properly rebuild from
scratch on upgrade..
you could test that with 'update-initramfs -t -c -k all' and reboot with
splash enabled, if above is correct then the problem should be fixed.
..or that there's a plymouth<->mesa<->libdrm issue with your graphic
card driver. are you having anything different then an intel gpu?
